Release notes summary

This release sharpens deforestation assessment and improves the protected-area reference layer for Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). Unlike the broader v1.11 release, v1.12 is deliberately focused: no new origins are added, and geospatial consistency, plausibility, integrity, LGL03, and attribute tests remain unchanged.

  • Better deforestation maps: DEF04 commercial maps now better capture timber plantations for selected coffee origins, while DEF01 public maps are refreshed with 2025 source data.

  • Stricter Low for deforestation overlap: Low now means zero deforestation overlap. Small overlaps move to Medium; the Critical threshold is unchanged.

  • Buffered geopoint approach: GER10 now assesses geopoints with a farm-size-based buffer, reducing missed deforestation risk near point records.

Older maps and previous behaviour remain available by running an older EUDR Test Profile version.

DEF01

v1.04

The public deforestation maps for the following countries have been updated: Argentina, Cuba, Gabon, Malawi, Paraguay, Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste, United States of America, Uruguay

Farm plot overlaps with deforestation alert (public maps). Two of the three public maps that make up the DEF01 reference layer were updated in 2025, so the public deforestation maps are updated accordingly. The new sources are: Hansen Global Forest Change v1.13 (2000–2025), JRC Tropical Moist Forest Annual Change collection (1990–2025), and EC JRC Global Map of Forest Cover 2020 V3. This applies only to origins that are not covered by Space Intelligence maps, and keeps deforestation results current up to 2025. The severity thresholds are unchanged.

The commercial deforestation maps for the following countries have been updated: Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Vietnam

Farm plot overlaps with deforestation area (commercial map). The new maps were created using an updated methodology which correctly identifies timber plantations (e.g. eucalyptus). Previously these could be read as natural forest loss, producing false deforestation flags. The update mainly concerns coffee origins. All other DEF04 origins keep their existing maps.

The risk thresholds now depend on whether there is any overlap at all. The new low risk threshold does not allow any overlap with deforestation — small overlaps that previously still scored low are now scored medium risk. Thresholds are now expressed in hectares instead of m².

Farm plot overlaps with deforestation area (commercial map). Low risk now means a farm plot is entirely free from deforestation overlap, which gives more confidence in deforestation-free claims. The previously non-critical overlap (<5% and ≤0.1 ha, OR <0.025 ha) is now classified as medium risk, since it can be caused by inaccuracies in the data rather than real deforestation. There is no change to the critical threshold: 0.025 ha = 250 m² and 0.1 ha = 1,000 m², so only the unit changed. This test does not use the high band. Some plots may move from low to medium even when the underlying geometry and the maps have not changed. For geopoints, DEF04 remains a binary in/out test. The graded, buffered assessment is provided by GER10.

Geopoints are now assessed with a deforestation buffer instead of being treated as zero-area points. The buffer area is 2× the reported farm plot size, capped at 5 Ha. The buffered geopoint is then assessed with the same thresholds as DEF01 or DEF04, depending on which deforestation test the dataset uses. The test now also applies to origins using public maps.

Geopoint is too close to deforestation area. Previously the test measured the distance from the geopoint to the nearest deforestation area, which meant deforestation risk near a farm could be missed. Because geopoints lack defined boundaries, a buffer based on the declared farm size creates a proper assessment zone. Since the geopoint is typically not the centre of the farm plot, the size is overestimated, providing a more conservative result. The previous distance bands (500 m / 300 m / 113 m) no longer apply.

LGL01

A new protected-area reference layer is used for the following country: Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). MINEF maps replace the IBAT data previously used.

Farm overlaps with protected areas. The quality of the IBAT map for Côte d’Ivoire was not sufficient, so maps published by MINEF — the country’s Ministry of Water and Forests, last updated July 2026 — are now used instead. A legal-context review was added to these maps in order to provide detailed risk scoring. The layer includes agroforestry areas and protected enclaves. All other origins keep their existing protected-area layers.

💡 DEF04 has introduced medium risk for all small (non-critical) overlaps with deforestation. It still does not use the High riskband. The Critical threshold is numerically identical to v1.11 — only the unit changed (m² → ha). For geopoints, DEF04 remains a binary in/out test; the graded buffer assessment lives in GER10.

What did not change in v1.12

  • No new origins were added (v1.11 added Panama and China). The total stays at 47.

  • DEF01 severity thresholds are unchanged: no overlap = Low, any overlap = Critical; geopoints ≥300 m from the nearest deforestation area = Low.

  • GEC01–GEC09, GEP01–GEP03, GET tests, GER01/GER06, LGL03, and attribute tests are unchanged in v1.12.
