Introduction
Creating subset datasets is a powerful way to strengthen your compliance approach under the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
A subset dataset allows you to include only the farm plots you need for compliance, rather than linking your parcel to an entire supplier dataset. You can also combine plots from multiple datasets to create a tailored selection that reflects your actual shipment.
Why Use Subset Datasets?
Subset datasets help reduce compliance risk under EUDR. Here’s why:
Avoid over-declaration: Importers often include more polygons than necessary because they cannot precisely identify the origin of a parcel. This increases risk.
Prevent non-compliance: Under EUDR, a single non-compliant plot can render your entire dataset non-compliant.
Be audit-ready: Including extra, irrelevant plots raises the likelihood of your dataset failing an audit.
By using a subset, you ensure you’re only including what is strictly required — no more, no less.
When Should You Use a Subset Dataset?
Subset datasets are especially useful when:
Supplier datasets don’t match your shipment exactly
You source from multiple areas within one supplier’s dataset
You want to link only compliant plots and avoid unnecessary risk
You can check the tutorial or follow the article instructions below explaining what subset datasets are, why they matter, and how to create one using the Verify platform.
How to Create a Subset Dataset in Verify
Step 1: Preparing datasets
Before uploading the subset data, you’ll need to prepare to include only the farm plots required for compliance.
Locate the dataset you’d like to create a subset from.
Using the Query Builder, you can filter low-risk and/or medium-risk farm records based on the Compliance Score and Data Quality Score.
Please note that the risk profiles used for filtering will depend on your internal policy. An example is provided below.
Download the data in .xls format after applying the filters on the query builder:
The Excel extract will contain the filtered farm plots using the query builder. You can copy the farm plot IDs to create a subset of the data which is compliant with the EUDR.
Step 2: Open the Parcel You’re Working On
Go to the Parcels section in the left-hand menu.
Choose the parcel you're working on.
You'll be able to create the subset at the "Link Dataset" stage.
Step 3: Link Dataset Subset
You’ll need to be in the ‘Link Datasets’ section, which is part of the Parcels Preparation stage.
When you select the ‘Create Subset Dataset’ option, you’ll be able to link only a subset of the clean, EUDR-compliant data to your parcel.
Insert the name of the dataset you would like to create a subset from.
Copy and paste the
farm_plot_IDsalong with the correspondingfarmer_IDsthat have been prepared in Excel, in order to generate the subset.
After creating the dataset subset, you will see it marked with the symbol shown below, and a new name will be generated automatically that you can select and link to the parcel.
Summary
Subset datasets ensure you're including only what's necessary, improving compliance confidence and reducing regulatory risk.
