Crop extraction is now available in the Verify portal. You can enable it during dataset setup and explore the extracted crop area on the map, without needing API access.
What is crop extraction?
A farm plot boundary may include crop areas as well as roads, buildings, water, or natural vegetation. Crop extraction detects where the crop is grown within each farm plot and displays that area separately from the full plot boundary.
This helps you understand how the detected crop area relates to the farm boundary submitted in your dataset.
What’s new?
View extracted crop areas directly on the map
Previously available through the API, crop extraction results are now visible in the portal. You can view the extracted crop geometry alongside the original farm polygon and explore it using the map tools, including Visual Inspection.
Enable crop extraction during dataset setup
You can now activate crop extraction from the Configuration screen when preparing a supported dataset.
Access per customer account
Crop extraction can be enabled for individual customer accounts. If the option is unavailable, contact the Meridia Customer Success team to check whether the feature is enabled for your account.
What can you use it for?
Understand the crop area within a farm plot. Compare the detected crop area with the full boundary submitted in your dataset.
Review the surrounding landscape. Explore the extracted crop geometry together with satellite imagery and available map layers, including deforestation and native ecosystems.
Inspect individual farm plots. Open a specific plot from the results table and review its crop geometry and plot details on the map.
Support visual review. Use Visual Inspection to examine the extracted crop area in more detail.

How to use crop extraction
Step 1: Start your data upload
Create a new dataset in the Verify portal. For detailed upload instructions, see 3. Datasets: How to Upload Data.
Select Soy as the commodity and Argentina or Paraguay as the origin. Enter a dataset name, then click Save & Continue.
Step 2: Select the DCF profile
Choose the Deforestation and Conversion Free (DCF) test profile and the methodology version you want to use.
Click Save & Continue.
Step 3: Enable crop extraction
On the Configuration screen, switch on Enable crop extraction.
This allows Verify to detect where the crop is grown within each farm plot and display that area separately from the full plot boundary.
Click Save & Continue, then upload your data files in the Upload files step.
Step 4: Map your attributes and create filters
In Map attributes, use the dropdown menus to match the fields in Verify to the corresponding columns in your uploaded data.
Map the required Farm plot ID and other available information, such as:
Farmer ID
Farmer name
Farm plot size in hectares
Mapping date
Choose the columns that contain the relevant information in your own dataset. The column names shown in the screenshot are examples.
Next, use Create Filter to add filters based on information in your dataset. These filters help you find specific records or groups when reviewing results.
For example, you can create a filter for a farmer group, cooperative, or mapping date if that information is included in your data.
Click Save & Continue, then complete the Run tests step to process your dataset.
Step 5: Open the results on the map
Once processing is complete, open the Farm plots results table.
You can access the map in two ways:
View the current results: Click View on map above the table.
View a specific farm plot: Click the map icon on the relevant row, highlighted in the screenshot below.
Step 6: Explore the crop extraction results
The map displays the extracted crop area alongside the original farm plot boundary.
In Legend and layers, look for Crop extraction is enabled beneath Farm plots with risk scores. This confirms that the feature is active for the dataset.
Select a farm plot to review its details. Use the layer controls to show or hide available layers and examine the crop area in its surrounding landscape. You can also open Visual Inspection from the plot details panel for further review.
How does crop extraction affect test results?
Crop extraction also affects how certain DCF tests assign risk scores. When enabled, Verify considers whether detected deforestation or conversion overlaps the extracted crop area or occurs elsewhere within the farm boundary.
This helps distinguish events that overlap the crop area from events located entirely outside it, while still identifying risks within the wider farm plot.
Example: DCF01 — Farm plot overlaps with deforestation
For farm polygons, DCF01 checks deforestation overlap against the tolerance thresholds of more than 2% of the farm plot area OR more than 3 hectares.
When crop extraction is enabled and a crop area is identified, the following rules apply:
Risk level | Assessment |
Critical | High-confidence deforestation exceeds the tolerance thresholds within the farm boundary and also overlaps the extracted crop area. |
High | High-confidence deforestation exceeds the tolerance thresholds within the farm boundary but is located entirely outside the extracted crop area. |
Medium | Low-confidence deforestation exceeds the tolerance thresholds within the farm boundary. |
Low | No deforestation is detected, or the detected overlap is below both tolerance thresholds: less than 2% and less than 3 hectares. |
Without crop extraction, the High risk category is not used for DCF01. High-confidence deforestation exceeding the tolerance thresholds anywhere within the farm boundary is classified as Critical.
For example, a 100-hectare farm plot overlaps 4 hectares of high-confidence deforestation. Without crop extraction, DCF01 returns Critical. With crop extraction enabled, it returns High if the deforestation lies entirely outside the extracted crop area, or Critical if it also overlaps that area.
Which other tests can be affected?
DCF02 — Farm plot overlaps with conversion: Applies the same distinction to conversion areas. High-confidence conversion above the tolerance thresholds is classified as Critical when it overlaps the extracted crop area, or High when it lies entirely outside that area.
DCF03 — Producer-level contamination linked to deforestation: Uses the highest DCF01 risk score across plots associated with the same Farmer ID. Changes to DCF01 results can therefore affect the DCF03 results of associated plots.
DCF05 — Producer-level contamination linked to conversion: Applies the same farmer-level approach using DCF02 results.
DCF03 and DCF05 are skipped when the dataset does not contain Farmer IDs.
If no crop area can be identified: With crop extraction enabled, DCF01 and DCF02 return N/A for that plot. This should not be interpreted as a Low risk result or confirmation that no deforestation or conversion occurred.
Where can you check the test rules?
You can review the methodology and severity thresholds directly in the portal:
Open Tests & Resolutions from the sidebar.
Select the DCF profile and the methodology version used for your dataset.
Find the relevant test code, such as DCF01, and click Details.
Open Severity thresholds to review the risk categories. Use Test info and Resolutions for further guidance.
You can also click Open Methodology PDF to review the full documentation for the selected profile version.
Summary
Crop extraction identifies and displays crop areas within farm plots directly in the Verify portal. It also refines DCF01 and DCF02 risk scores based on whether detected deforestation or conversion overlaps the crop area, with potential effects on farmer-level results in DCF03 and DCF05. Available for soy in Argentina and Paraguay under the DCF profile, with access enabled per account.
